More about: Hayley Mary
New Aussie star Hayley Mary has shared 'Like A Woman Should' - a politically-charged dance party hit with vintage undertones and a hell of a lot of promise. It foretells the arrival of her new EP The Piss, The Perfume, which drops on 17 January.
'Like A Woman Should' possesses plenty of high-tempo thrill - enough, in fact, to make it ideal for walking confidently down the street to. Fitting, considering the song's subject matter is walking down the street, imagining the confidence and freedom of doing so as a woman without the fear of harrassment.
With echoes of Sharon Van Etten and vintage forebears like Joan Armatrading, it's a spot-on hit. Hear it:
Clad like a bonafide star, Hayley Mary goes on a night out in the accompanying video to the tune, acting out the feeling behind its writing, “I wrote this one evening while living in Edinburgh...I think of it a little bit as a reflection on the zone where insecurity clashes with romance; or harsh realities meet idealism. Perhaps it’s an expression of my hope that the latter will win in the end,” she said.
The Piss, The Perfume EP lands 17 January via I OH YOU records.
