Lola Young shows off her musical and lyrical prowess in brand-new single ‘Ruin My Makeup’, out now on Island Records. The track finds balance between tongue-in-cheek and emotional as she moves between fast-paced verses and soaring choruses.

‘Ruin My Makeup’ starts of musically quite simple, before building up to a more theatrical and intricate finale. Her vocals can jump from the low, half-spoken verses and the more expressive, belting choruses effortlessly; at just 20, she’s already a force to be reckoned with.

In the music video she stares down the camera with unwavering confidence:

She explains the significance of the track:

“‘Ruin My Makeup’ is a song I wrote about the duality of a person, well me. I was in a place at the time where I was trying to figure out whether my confidence was hindered by my vulnerability. If I cry about you, it will only ruin my makeup. It’s a sad song at heart but it has elements of strength and power. It touches on my journey through life, struggling with acceptance whether that be through religion or friends or drugs or most importantly through love.”
