Wait - has Yungblud gone indie? Following a Billy Idol 80s track with ‘The Funeral’, a 90s Nirvana Grunge moment on ‘Fleabag; the singer has decided to hook onto indie sleaze with ‘Don’t Feel Like Feeling Sad Today’.
A high-octain 2 minutes, the short track sways between almost Oasis-like melodies and big-stadium easy-rock. Culminating in chanting and echoing, crowd-swaying ohs - the sonic depiction of what “happiness feels like” to Dominic Harrison suggests joy is masterful frontmanship as this track is guaranteed to be a big live moment from now on.
Offering up a moment of optimising in a usually dark discography, this taste of what's to come on his upcoming 3rd album suggests a different direction. Far more radio-playable, it seems like Yungblud has his sights set on the mainstream, releasing more approachable tracks than anything he has previously. Stripping back some up of the WHATS UP IM F*CKING YUNGBLUD screaming persona to reveal more introspective, subtle lyricism, it feels like a turning point.
Alongside a video filmed last week at Londons Southbank, the singer simply asked fans to turn up and be a part of it. He said: “All over the world I meet my fans in the streets, to feel a connection. To look into another person's eyes and see that they’re going through the same things as me. It’s kind of become a ritual of ours. Put it this way, the fucking police all over the world know when we’re town! So I said let's roll some cameras, pull up a truck, no permits, no permission, tell people to meet me at a location and have a massive water fight. Sing, scream, and feel together. Imperfect, raw, real … happy”
