The Prayers - 'God Save The Prayers EP'

The Prayers - 'God Save The Prayers EP'
starstarno starno starno star

Its hard to know where to begin with describing The Prayers debut EP, as I don’t think even they know what they should sound like. Apparently they declare themselves as a hardcore band, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Rekindling a pop Supergrass sound with quirky Jam style riffs on 'Gel n Leather,' is a great basis, but all too often they drift dangerously close to Hoosiers boundaries, which is just about as far away from hardcore as Beth Ditto is from that size 10 dress.

The images that come to mind get even more bizarre on 'Looselips,' as all I can imagine is a distraught Danny singing about the recently departed Sandy in the camper than camp Grease soundtrack. No wait; now I see a glammed up Freddie, as Brian May begins yet another Queen guitar solo; and now The Coral are swaying gently in my mind; oh no; now they’ve veered wildly to a Nirvana angst lyric. My brain hurts. There are far too many styles to remain interested, and although my toe is tapping uncontrollably, I can’t remember a single beat moments later. Final track on the EP, opens with a carbon copy Oasis riff, sung with annoying Richard Archer vocals, and very un-hardcore lyrics, “I like your hairdo too, hairdoooo.” Even the swirling “maybe, baby” line sends me spinning back to the Grease soundtrack. If only I was listening to that right now. I wonder where it is?

Released 12/11/07 on Art Fag.
