Ireland Nominates Puppet Turkey For Eurovision

Ireland are set to ruffle a few feathers at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, after a puppet turkey won the country’s nomination to sing at the Serbian ceremony.

Dustin The Turkey performed alongside five other nominees on Saturday night and won through after the public pledged their votes.

His tongue-in-cheek track ‘Irelande Douze Pointe’ was penned by Darren Smith and Simon Fine and pokes fun at Eurovision’s voting system.

Dustin himself is no newcomer to the music industry having released 14 singles and six albums in his career – one that has garnered him a cult status in his homeland. His last album ‘Bling When You’re Minging’ was released in Christmas 2005.

He has been a mini-celebrity since 1990 when he appeared on Irish Television alongside puppets Zig & Zag of The Big Breakfast fame.

Unlike some of the more traditional clean cut Eurovision entrants, Dustin is a bit of a slovenly character and will openly burp onstage and generally act in a, erm, fowl manner.

His main rival is Saturday’s national vote Leona Daly jokingly strangled Dustin upon the result being announced.

The 2008 Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Belgrade on May 20.

  • Good on ireland, the eurovision is a joke. So its about time someone had the sense to enter a joke act, i only hope that bill bailey manages to sort out his tour dates so he can enter.

  • Considering the number of turkeys that the UK has sent to the Eurovision contest, what right does anyone here have to object. I’ve seen Dustin the Turkey, and he’s funny, but the strong Dublin accent can be hard to understand.

  • Well done Dustin. You will do us proud in the great Eurovision Circus. In the past few years we have witnessed many acts in the Eurovision that would not look out of place in a circus ring so why should Ireland sending the performing poultry to represent us in the Eurocircus be any different?
