Technically of all the Mark Ronson ‘remixes’ (adding trumpets is hardly a remix) ‘Just’ is probably the best, which speaks volumes. It originally came out about two years ago when Ronson was a little known hip hop DJ with up coming production jobs on chubby jazz star Amy Winehouse and ‘Daughter of Keith’ Lily Allen. Fast forward twenty four months and Winehouse is the tabloids bread and butter, Allen is ‘yoof TV’ and platinum selling pop star and Ronson’s album ‘Version’ has sold something like a billion copies to bored Scissor Sisters fans.
‘Just’ is Radiohead’s grungiest moment with feral and guitars and that video, in Ronson’s hands it has become something that might well have been danced to at the ill fated party at the beginning of Cloverfield- a bland idea of what trendy music is without ever bothering to try and do something original. Just add more trumpets.
Having managed to strip The Smiths of all their soul and wit Mark Ronson has now bent Thom Yorke over and fucked him harder than Guy Hands ever would have. One question remains, why on earth are credible bands letting him get away with it?
Released 18/02/08 on Columbia.
