Passenger - 'Table For One'
You know the kind, the middle aged bloke that sits on his own in Wetherspoons, staring vacantly into the last inch of a pint that he’s been nursing for the past 25 minutes. What a loser! Or not as Passenger’s ‘Table For One’ illustrates, written about that exact same bloke, a solitary regular in shit pubs the country over, condemned to sit alone in order to distance himself from an unwelcoming and inadequate home life. Treated with immense empathy, passionate believability, resolute melancholy and a touch of self imposed defiance, its not an upbeat track by any means but nor should it be; it is in fact a stunning piece of stirring storytelling and one of the highlights of the album. So the next time you walk past JD Wetherspoons, spare a thought for the solitary bloke at the bar; mind you, with Thursday night Curry Club and beer at less than £1.50 a pint, its not all bad…
Released 10/03/08 on Chalkmark.
