Babyshambles fans have launched a Facebook group in a bid to free the band’s frontman Pete Doherty from prison.
Doherty was sentenced to 14 weeks in jail yesterday (April 8th) for breaking his probation order and using drugs.
The singer’s sentence, which began immediately, has forced his solo show at the Royal Albert Hall later this month to be postponed.
The group, entitled Free Pete Doherty, calls for the singer to be given “therapy, not punishment”.
Despite support from fans, Doherty has failed to capture the support of Gigwise readers, with 74% saying it’s about time he was sent to jail.
Doherty was given a suspended sentence for drug and driving offences in October last year.
The conditions of the sentence instructed him to appear in court for regular check-ups, as well as undertake a rehabilitation course.
Unless Doherty wins an appeal, he will miss a scheduled appearance at the Glastonbury Festival this June.
