Daily Mail Say Emo Coverage Has Been 'Balanced And Restrained'

It defends reports...

The Daily Mail has given the emo movement “balanced” and “restrained” coverage that is in the public interest, a statement from the newspaper claims.

The paper says that its initial report on the recent suicide of teenager Hannah Bond, a devout following of the music genre, had been accurate and that further articles explained the tragedy in “calm and un-sensational language.”

The newspapers comments follow a march on its London offices by fans of My Chemical Romance yesterday (May 31st).

The newspaper, one of a number of publications to report on Bond’s death, was singled out by fans after it said that "no child was safe from the sinister cult of emo".

Bond, 13, hung herself from a bunk bed in her bedroom after telling her parents that she was going to kill herself.

The coroner in the inquest, Roger Sykes, said he found elements of the emo movement “very disturbing”.

Saturday’s march, which featured hundreds of music fans, was designed to remove My Chemical Romance’s often negative association with the emo movement.

In its statement, the Daily Mail stressed it had “run two prominent page lead letters from an Emo music fan and from a fan of My Chemical Romance defending their point of view.”

“Our music critic admires the music of the band and publicised the band's UK tour last year,” it added.

The newspaper concluded by saying that the march in London “provides wonderful publicity for Warners and their impending release of My Chemical Romance's latest album.”

    • Omg. Emo is not a 'sinister cult''. It''s a style of music. And I friggen adore MCR. Yeah, I listen to emo music. If she killed herslef, she had a reason. It wasn''t MCR''s fault. Why weren''t the parents mentioned? I mean seriously....if they knew she was gonna do it. Where were they in this??
