Access to an entry on German heavy metal band The Scorpions' Wikipedia page has been blocked in the UK over an image of a naked girl.
The Internet Watch Foundation warned internet providers that the image, which features on the cover of the band's 1976 album 'Virgin Killer', could be illegal.
As many as 95% of British internet users are no longer able to access the page.
The decision, which was taken following consultation with the police, has angered Wikipedia volunteers, who regularly keep the online encyclopaedia up-to-date.
Volunteer David Gerard told the BBC: "Blocking text is a whole new thing - it's the first time they've done this on such a visible site."
The website also claim that the image has appeared widely in books and has never previously been considered illegal.
A spokeswoman for the IWF said a reader had alerted the Foundation to the image last week.
