Jeff Buckley Fans Launch Bid To Make 'Hallelujah' Christmas Number 1

Instead of X-Factor version...

Fans of the late Jeff Buckley have launched a bid to make the singer's cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' Christmas number one.

Over 3000 people have joined a Facebook group dedicated to the challenge in a bid to prevent the winner of The X Factor from dominating the festive chart.

As previously reported on Gigwise, this year's winner will release their own cover of the song as a Christmas single next week.

Buckley's cover of 'Hallelujah' originally featured on his 1994 debut album 'Grace'. The singer died in 1997.

His version has already climbed six places to number 43 in the UK singles chart after contestants road tested the track on a recent edition of the talent contest.

It is the second time Buckley has enjoyed posthumous success with the song as a result of a reality TV show.

Earlier this year, the song topped the US Billboard download chart after being sung by Jason Castro, a contestant on American Idol.

  • Oh no! A Facebook group, you say? Why that is tantamount to actually doing something. Simon Cowell must be terrified.

  • Ah another observant music lover! Nobody else knew it was a cover! Thank you so much for pointing that out. It's the most famous, Cohens favourite version and quite frankly the best. Go crawl back to your NME

  • "Ah another observant music lover! Nobody else knew it was a cover!" - Very funny, self proclaimed music expert. Jeff Buckley's, Grace is a classic album and yes, of course I know Leonard Cohen did the original version of Hallelujah. I don't usually go in for this kind of thing but I will be downloading the Jeff Buckley track - even though I think digital downloads are rubbish.
