My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way: Watchmen Is Greatest Comic Ever

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has described Watchmen as the “greatest comic ever written”.

Way said the series, which is being adapted for the big screen, had been influential on his career as a musician and a comic book creator.

“More so than any record, it was the first thing that really made me say to myself, 'This is what I want to do',” Way wrote in The Guardian.

Watchmen, which was created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, was originally released as a limited comic series in 1986.

The soundtrack for the film adaptation features a My Chemical Romance cover of Bob Dylan's 'Desolation Row'.

Writing on the newspaper's website, Way said their version of the song was “particularly relevant” to the graphic comic series.

“Our version came from a desire to do something 'of its era', which in the case of Watchmen is an alternate 1980s,” he wrote.

“I wanted the music to feel like how youth culture might feel at the time, so we approached it like an 80s new wave song.”

Meanwhile, Way also noted how his own comic book series, The Umbrella Academy, was “indebted” to Watchmen.

“You don't want to rip somebody off, but you want to explore things they started to explore,” he wrote.

“Even if it's just characters having an awkward conversation while drinking coffee on a rooftop or in a diner.

“The fact that the characters in Umbrella Academy already had a history was definitely a nod to Watchmen, too. And the fact that they're all 30 and the fun of their youth is kind of over.”
