Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to one count of assault against his former girlfriend, Rihanna, but escaped jail thanks to a last minute plea deal.
The 19-year-old was sentenced by a Los Angeles judge to five years' probation and ordered to undertake six months of community service.
He must also attend domestic violences courses and stay at least 50 yards from the singer. The distance will be reduced to 10 yards at music events, such as awards ceremonies.
Brown was charged with assault over an incident between the former couple in Los Angeles in February.
Rihanna had been due to give evidence in court yesterday, but the case was resolved after Brown entered a plea deal.
Judge Patricia Schnegg told Brown it was “commendable” that he had taken responsibility for his conduct.
Rihanna's lawyer said the result was a “fair and just resolution”.
Rihanna, herself, has not made any comment about the incident, which forced both performers to withdraw from the Grammy Awards.
Brown has previously said he was "sorry and saddened" about the incident, and revealed he was attending anger management classes.
The singer could have faced up to five years in jail if he had been found guilty without a plea.
