Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan has described the band's Mercury Prize nomination as “pretty big”.
The group's third LP 'West Pauper Ryder Lunatic Asylum' is among twelve albums shortlisted for the annual prize.
Speaking to BBC 6 Music, Meighan said the group had not made the album to get industry recognition, but were pleased to receive a nomination.
"We've worked so hard and played so many shows and it's just nice to be recognised," he said.
"We never go out there to win any awards but this is pretty big."
Friendly Fires, Bat For Lashes and La Roux have also been nominated for the award.
But other notable acts, including Lily Allen and Oasis, have been left off the short list.
The 2009 Mercury Prize ceremony will take place in London on September 8.
