America is producing a lot of brilliant, lo-fi punk bands at the moment. However very few capture the spirit of vintage rock 'n' roll quite like Dum Dum Girls. Gigwise caught up with the band leader/ singer Dee Dee when the band sailed through London earlier this month...

Gigwise: Can you briefly tell us about yourself and your music?
My name is Dee Dee and I write and record as Dum Dum Girls. The project started as a home recording boredom-killer and has since then morphed into a live band.  I consider myself a pop songwriter, with an undying love for a sound I call "blissed-out buzzsaw."

How long have you been performing these songs?
DDG as an all-girl band has been playing sporadically live since October 2009. I”ve been recording under the moniker of Dum Dum Girls for about a year and a half.

When did you meet your band mates?

Frankie was the first one to help me out. We knew each other over the internet, and met for the first time before the first DDG show in NYC in July 2009. Bambi is an old friend, and Jules was introduced to me by a mutual friend in August 2009.

What would be the ideal environment to listen to your music?
Stoned looking up at the stars.

When is your debut album due?
I Will Be is released on March 29th, 2010 through Sub Pop.

How would you describe the album to your parents?
Kind of noisy, but listen closely for the pretty. I don't think they initially understood why I wasn't pursuing a career related to my college education, but they've always supported me. I don't think they're too familiar with the album yet, but I think they enjoyed "Bhang Bhang" and "Rest of Our Lives."

What has been the best gig of you career thus far?
Our first show in London at Old Blue Last. It was shocking to see a packed club for us, completely thrilling.  Plus the room was long and narrow, which seems to swallow up our sound best.

Are there any producers or artists you'd like to collaborate with?
I'd like to work with Richard Gottehrer more traditionally for the next record.  I'd love to duet with Danzig or Iggy Pop! The Misfits are one of my favorite bands.  Danzig's a crooner singing pop songs with gnarly accompaniment.  I think Iggy Pop is a great songwriter and lyricist.

What are your plans for the rest of 2010?

Tour the record with my ladies, sneak in some time with my husband.

Who are your favourite new band?
Pearl Harbor - Dreamy Los Angeles underwater.  A young Johnny Marr-ette on guitar. They are absolute dolls, and they're so informed musically, and they're doing something very cool and refreshing.
