Marion 'Suge' Knight has begun legal action against Kanye West and a Miami nightclub over a shooting incident five years ago.
Knight is seeking more than $1m in damages after he was shot in the leg at a party hosted by the rapper at the Shore Club in August 2005.
In court papers, the Music mogul and former Death Row Records boss claimed neither West nor the club had provided appropriate security and protection.
His lawyer Marc Brumer said: "He's an icon in the music industry. He walks in a room and he lights it up.
"He had an expectation of security there. How someone came with a gun into a very VIP party, that just doesn't meet the smell test in life."
No arrests have ever been made over the shooting, which took place ahead of the MTV Video Music Awards.
Knight's damages claim includes medical bills and the loss of a diamond earring. The trial is due to begin on December 6 in Miami.
