Government To Make Copying CDs Legal

Oudated legislation set to be given overhaul...

August 03, 2011 by Jason Gregory

The Government is on the verge of scrapping laws which make it illegal to copy the content from CDs or DVDs.

Although millions of people already rip albums and DVDs to their computers, many do not realise that it is technically illegal.

The change, expected to be announced by Business secretary Vince Cable, comes in the wake of the Hargreaves Reviews of UK copyright law.

It suggested that the practice of copying material for personal use had become outdated.

Cable told BBC News: "We are talking about big changes. Bringing the laws more up-to- date to have a proper balance which allows consumers and businesses to operate more freely, but at the same time protect genuinely creative artists and penalise pirates."

The government believe the chance could benefit the economy by up to £8bn over the next few years.
