'Dad David Bowie Wanted Me To Be A Popstar' Reveals Duncan Jones

Duncan Jones has admitted that his father, David Bowie, wanted him to become a musician rather than a film director.

The Source Code director has said that he subconsciously knew from a young age that he was destined not to follow in his legendary dad's footsteps.

He told the Mail on Sunday: "He really, really wanted me to learn an instrument. He tried to get me to learn the drums but I didn't want to. The saxophone? No. Piano? No. Guitar - no thanks! Bless him. He kept on trying and nothing was happening. Nothing would take.

"I don't know if subconsciously there was some reaction going on; if there was something in me that didn't want to learn an instrument - because I couldn't have been that incompetent. It didn't interest me so it wasn't going to happen."

The 40-year-old added: "The celebrity and the spectacle has never interested me. I love my work but I don't like being in the spotlight. I was never going to be an actor, that's for sure."

Jones also said that he tried to distance himself from his father's spotlight when he was trying to crack Hollywood, saying: "I've certainly never used my father's name as a way of getting a meeting. And fortunately, I've never needed to."

For Jones, though, one advantage was being able to visit movie sets as a child, saying: "That was like going to Disneyland. I'd see the amazing sets being built, how the make-up worked. I hung out with Dad when he was doing Labyrinth. And I remember the amazing '50s Soho set on Absolute Beginners. All that made a huge impression on me."

Jones has recently said that he would like to direct Bowie in a movie one day.
