Shirley Manson has revealed that it was major label arguements which kept Garbage away from the music scene for so long.
The singer revealed that band never planned to take a seven year break from music in an interview with Billboard.com, saying that their relationship with former label Geffen faltered when radio stations stopped playing their music.
"We were just at odds with the whole (major label) system morally and intellectually," says the singer in the new interview. "We were stuck with a record label who didn't give two flying s***** about us because they couldn't get us on the radio.
"They were totally disinterested and washed their hands of us... We were constantly surrounded by such negativity that it just ends up eating away at the individuals in the band and we began to take it out on one another. It was not a good situation."
Manson also reveals that the label was less than keen on her solo album, once again concerned that it was not commercial enough to succeed. "They thought it was too obtuse and too dark and they couldn't get it played on pop radio and they wanted me to be the kind of artist to make big pop hits."
The band are now releasing music on their own label, STUNVOLUME, and new single 'Blood For Poppies' perfects a balance between the commercial and the hardcore.
Garbage release new album 'Not Your Kind Of People' on 4 May. The band will play a string of live UK dates this summer. Garbage's UK tour dates are as follows:
London Troxy (May 9)
London O2 Academy Brixton (July 1)
Wolverhampton Civil Hall (2)
Manchester Academy (3)
Glasgow Barrowlands (4)
