Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson has spoken of her support for youngsters who self-harm, and of her own past as a self-harmer.
In a new interview with Instinct magazine, the Garbage frontwoman speaks of feelings of 'worthlessness' and says she relates to struggling fans.
"As a former self-harmer myself, I really do relate to anyone who is suffering so acutely from feelings of worthlessness that they attack themselves. That's born of a feeling of not being heard," says Manson. "It's such a gentle person usually who turns in on themselves, like they'd rather hurt themselves than hurt somebody else.
"I do feel a lot of empathy toward people who suffer like that, or what I like to call hypersensitivity. It's a form of intelligence in a funny way; you're reading things that most people are blind or deaf to."
Garbage release new album 'Not Your Kind Of People' on 4 May. The band will play a string of live UK dates this summer. Garbage's UK tour dates are as follows:
London Troxy (May 9)
London O2 Academy Brixton (July 1)
Wolverhampton Civil Hall (2)
Manchester Academy (3)
Glasgow Barrowlands (4)
