Avengers Assemble director Joss Whedon has revealed that founding Avengers member Janet Pym, aka Wasp, was cut from an early movie script in favour of Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow.

Writers had originally planned to include the hero, who has the ability to shrink to miniscule size, can fly and 'sting' enemies, but was replaced by Johansson's russian Spy character.

"Trying to figure out the way you want to introduce all those characters, that was stuff we were still tweaking in the edit," says Whedon of the changes to the original script.

Wasp is likely to make her big screen debut in the long-stalled Ant Man movie, set to be directed by Edgar Wright.

Meanwhile, Mark Ruffalo, who plays the Hulk in the new movie, has revealed he has signed up to appear in a future six movies as the unstoppable green superhuman.
