Against Me! singer Laura Jane Grace has made her stage debut at a US show after Tom Gabel came out as transgender at the start of this month.
The band have just begun a US tour alongside the Cult in the US, and Against Me! performed a 40-minute set - including a new track which deals with the singer's sexuality issues, 'Trangender Dysphoria Blues'. Following the show, Grace spoke of her apprehension before the show.
"I was worried that some people expected me to come out looking like Little Bo Peep or something," she said, reports Rolling Stone magazine, who also reveal that Grace did not address her new gender role during the performance.
One fan of Against Me! spoke of his support for the singer after the show, telling the magazine: "She did it for herself, not for anybody else. This is about her. She's doing something she really loves now and she's really happy – that's really awesome."
Gabel revealed his sex change plans at the start of May 2012, and is now living as Laura Jane Grace. Upon making the announcement, Gabel said: "I'm going to have embarrassing moments and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."
