Primark has confirmed that it will start to sell music in its 242 stores across the UK later this year.

The retail giant has struck a deal with Universal Music Group, home to artists such as Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Jay-Z, to sell their music across stores in Britain and Ireland.

Urban Outfitters and Claire's Accessories employ a similar policy of stocking selected titles amongst their usual stock.

A spokesperson for the retailer stated that: "Primark has a strong relationship with licensed product and the CDs are a natural complement to Primark's merchandise."

Primark's 242 stores in the UK could be another threat to the future of high street music retailer HMV, who have 220 stores. However, Primark are yet to say when and which stores they will be selling music in.
