Japan is to begin enforcing a change in the law, one where if an individual illegally downloads music, even one song, they will face two years in jail or a fine of up to £15,900.

Stealing music has been illegal in Japan for two years now, but the country has felt the need to tighten up laws even more, reports the BBC.

Japan is the second largest music market in the world after the US, where a huge nine out of 10 of downloads are illegal, reports The Recording Industry Association.

These new laws could be enforced over a single illegal download, but critics have said that the focus should be shifted onto the people who are making the material available, not the ones downloading it.

Steps are being taken the world over with regards to illegal downloading including the US, Sweden, The Ukraine and France.
