Love letters written by The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger in the summer of '69 have been sold at auction by for £187,250 by penniless ex-lover, Marsha Hunt.

The ten notes, written in 1969 to Hunt were expected to sell for up to £100k but ended up selling for nearly twice the estimated price. Hunt is the mother of Jagger's eldest child Karis and is thought to be the inspiration for the band's hit 'Brown Sugar'.

Hunt sold the love letters, written over 40 years ago in the summer of 1969, as she has become penniless in her old age and needs the cash. The letters are reported to have been written by Jagger while he was in Australia filming the movie Ned Kelly and are influenced by the poetry of Emily Dickinson.

Hunt spoke to The Guardian about her choice to sell the documents and insists she is only parting with them due to her financial circumstances.

"I'm broke," she tells the broadsheet. "I had friends who came to visit from Pennsylvania and there was no electricity in the house because the bill had been too high.

"One friend said, 'Surely you have something you can sell?'"

Hunt was confident that selling the letters is the right thing to do as she believed only a genuine Jagger fan will buy them. "Someone will protect them and someone who protects them will protect me because I will make enough money from the sale to repair my house in France."

"The letters speak for Mick at an incredible juncture in our lives. The summer of 69 was the end of a whole era of revolutionary spirit - we didn't know it was about to die.

"The sale is important. Someone I hope will buy those letters as our generation is dying and with us will go the reality of who we were and what life was."

Hunt will no doubt be thrilled at the amount raised by the auction.
