An Irish grandfather has reacted angrily to HMV's refusal of his grandson's vouchers and walked out of a store with three games.

Eric Nolan, from Tyrrelstown, Dublin, bought the voucher, worth €40 (£33), for his grandson for Christmas.

But HMV is no longer honouring the vouchers since the chain went into administration on Tuesday.

The grandfather was followed down Dublin's Henry Street after leaving the store with with Euro Truck Simulator 2 (€22.40), The Sims 3 Town Life (€11.99) and Rail Simulator (€28), according to the Irish Independent.

The total value of the games was €62.39, but was reduced to €46.80 with the 25% blue cross discount.

Nolan has pledged to post his €40 voucher and the remaining €6.80 balance to the store.

"Somebody has made a conscious decision not to pay out on vouchers and it's despicable," he told the Irish Independent.

"We are a nation of sheep - but I was determined to win this. HMV have taken hundreds of thousands of euros from the Irish people this Christmas and we shouldn't put up with it."

The news this week that HMV has gone into administration has saddened many but surprised few.

Earlier this week experts blamed the music chain's downfall on a failure to move into the online market successfully, while many shoppers have pointed to the shop's high prices as a reason.

The warning lights began to flash at the end of last week when the store launched a massive sale, and on Tuesday suspicions were confirmed when the brand announced it had gone into administration.

Shoppers on Dublin's Grafton Street arrived to find HMV closed down this morning

Many recording artists have expressed their sorrow about the brand's closing down, sharing fond memories of the store.

Frightened Rabbit frontman Scott Hutchison said in an interview that he was sad about the demise, but not surprised.

It is thought that more than 4,000 jobs will be lost if the chain doesn't find a buyer.
