Two people have been left seriously injured after a tent explosion at Camp Bestival yesterday (Thursday 1 August, 2013).
The Bournemouth Daily Echo reports that a man and a woman were hospitalised after a 'fireball' ripped through their tent when their gas stove leaked and was ignited by another nearby.
The woman was airlifted from the event at Lulworth Castle to a specialist burns unit in Bristol, while the man was taken to Dorset County Hospital by ambulance. Reports suggest that the blast was caused by two stoves being inside the same tent. The incident took place around 2pm.
Dorset Fire and Rescue claim that the fireball destroyed 20 per cent of the tent and also caused damage to an adjacent tent, believed to be in the traders' camping area of the festival.
"Never take a barbecue into a tent," said a spokesman from Dorset Fire and Rescue. "Not only is there a huge fire risk also potential for carbon monoxide poisoning. Be safe."
He continued: "Always make sure a disposable barbecue is out before you put it in the bin."
The festival continues until Sunday with appearances from Richard Hawley, Ash, The Levellers, Mark Owen, The Proclaimers, Grandmaster Flash and many more.
