Following the abrupt cancellation of their European tour back in November, citing “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition", The Civil Wars have announced an indefinite hiatus, at exactly the same time as their second studio album is due for release.

The self titled follow up to the multiple Grammy award-winning and critically acclaimed debut album Barton Hollow, is out now but comes with less than harmonious news concerning the Nashville duo's working and personal relationship.

Joy Williams has broken the silence, claiming personal and creative tensions which grew during a long and gruelling two year period of touring, have made it impossible for them to contine working for the time being.

However, without any word on whether a reconciliation lies ahead, it casts a doubt as to whether there will be a tour with the new record.

In spite of this seemingly collossal rift, Williams explains that their emotional conflict was an integral part of producing the album.

“I think we’ve made an even more emotional, visceral, raw, moving and universal record than even we did on the first one. Out of that tension, was birthed some music that I really don’t think could have been written any other way.”
