One Direction fans took to Twitter last night to express confusion as to why the band were wearing poppies during their X Factor performance.

The term 'wearing red flowers' briefly trended on the social media site in the wake of their Remembrance Day performance, with a scary number of fans seemingly unaware of the poppies' significance.

Check out a series of alarming tweets from last night's performance below:

It was reported last week that One Direction were the first act recruited by Bob Geldof for a 30th anniversary recording of Band Aid, with the likes of Ben Howard, Alt J and Florence and The Machine thought to also be involved.

More details have yet to be announced, however it is thought proceeds from the single, which will be released this Christmas, will be going towards fighting ebola.
