Established as a rival to the Brit Awards, The Mercury Prize has become one of the most coveted awards in the music industry.
Since its conception in 1992, the prize has been awarded to everyone from Dizzee Rascal to M People and from Primal Scream to Elbow.
It is voted for every year by a panel of judges, who consider every album released in the past year before selecting a shortlist of 12.
This year's Mercury Prize is due to be awarded in London tonight (September 7), so Gigwise thought it was only right to take a look at previous winners of the award.
Meanwhile, Gigwise will bring you the winner, as well as all the latest news, from the ceremony later. You can also watch live coverage on BBC Two at 10pm (BST).
