Music fans around the world celebrated what would have been John Lennon’s 71st birthday yesterday (October 9).
The former Beatle was shot dead outside his New York home in December 1980.
Celebrations were led by Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, who switched on a light beacon, the 'Imagine Peace Tower', on Vioey Island at 9m (BST) last night. The beam of light which reaches up to 4,000 metres into the air projected the words 'Imagine Peace'.
In New York, fans visited Strawberry Fields in Central Park as well as John Lennon's Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles.
Along with Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, Lennon pioneered music in the Beatles.
He was killed in 1980 by Mark Chapman, who earlier this year admitted that murdering the Beatle was a “horrible decision”. He has been denied parole.
