Because often the saddest songs are the best

It's been well documented what a brilliant year 2013 has been for music, but it's also been mighty depressing too. Some of the biggest and best tracks of the year have also been some of the most miserable and dark.
Often the finest songs are born of pain and gut-wrenching despair, and 2013 has seen plenty of examples of this. We've had typical Scottish sadness from the likes of Biffy Clyro and Frightened Rabbit, twisted reflections from Nick Cave and Queens Of The Stone Age, pop turned noir from Chvrches and even a little bit of urban upset from Sampha and The Weeknd. You name it, all genres have a found a reason to be less-than-cheerful.
Take off your Christmas cracker hat, wallow in your misery and weep into your mince pies as we sob through the 17 most depressing tracks of the year.
