In the smoky underground of XOYO’s intimate venue, Laura Doggett hops on stage to deliver a very personal and soulful performance. Whilst launching into the sultry and seductive ‘Phoenix’, Laura captures her audience immediately for the hour-long set.
‘Old Faces’, a track featured on ITV’s Broadchurch, was met with enthusiasm; the dark, haunting track is ethereal and completely captivating. Later, Alice Jemima joins Laura on-stage for a delicate duet of ‘Night Girl’; their smooth lyricism and contrast of vocals work just as well live as it does on record.
‘Into The Glass’, Laura’s current single, definitely carries a heavier pop sound to her earlier tracks. The single is quickly becoming a fan-favourite; it packs a punch and works incredibly well in XOYO’s setting.
“You’re all so beautiful!” Laura gushes before a group of dedicated fans. Sometimes she has an awkward stage presence, but its incredibly endearing as each song is welcomed with a friendly introduction.
Laura’s nervousness is charming, but any awkwardness is soon forgotten when she starts to sing. Laura’s vocals reach a depth many can only dream of, her sincere and ardent performance has the ability to bewitch any listener. Behind these lyrics is a tenacious wisdom and her controlled voice make the execution of them seem effortless. Laura has the intoxicating drawl of Lana Del Rey, but she truly carries an idiosyncratic style of her own.
Laura has an exciting summer ahead of her; at the end of the month she will be headlining the BBC Introducing Stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and in June she’s joining Taylor Swift at the British Summer Time Festival in Hyde Park. With an impressive few gigs ahead of her, Laura Doggett is able to make us all hopeful for the future of UK pop.
