Kendrick Lamar has surprise-released a brand new album, Untitled Unmastered, and it's now streaming on Spotify.
The album was actually recorded prior to Lamar recording his critically acclaimed 2015 album To Pimp A Butterfly -back in 2013 and 2014. All eight tracks simply bear the title that indicates the exact date they were recorded. The seventh track, 'untitled 07 2014 - 2016', seems to have been the result of two years' work.
In a recent interview with 2DopeBoyz, Lamar said, "I got a chamber of material from the album that I was in love where sample clearances or something as simple as a deadline kept it off the album."
He added, "But I think probably close to ten songs that I'm in love with that I'll still play and still perform that didn't make the cut." Perhaps this album comprises those tracks he was pained to leave off To Pimp A Butterfly.
Though this untitled album has come as a surprise, Lamar did actually give fans a few days warning. Earlier this week, he wrote on Instagram: "Ive decided 2 drop a project 1 day this week. I won't say wut day or who. It cud be 2nite So don't ask me jus stay close to the net. Is this Kool with y'all?"
