Nasty Cherry, of Netflix documentary fame, have just released their new EP The Movie, out now via Vroom Vroom Recordings. This record seems them further experiment with their infectious alt-pop sound with a bold attitude and strong musical chemistry.

‘Six Six Six’ is a drum-dominated album opener that really puts the rock in pop-rock. It’s this edge that makes them stand out from other pop groups. Repetitions of “drag me to hell/ drag me to heaven” make the song a good representation of the confidence and edge of modern alt-pop. There’s an impressive versatility on The Movie, ranging from the heavy to the dreamy, as is demonstrated on ‘All In My Head’. In just 13 minutes, Nasty Cherry show their musical range effortlessly on just a handful of tracks. Even still, the original plan was to make the record even more ambitious, with a full-length feature film to be released alongside the EP. The band said:

“We wanted to make a ‘Stray Cat Rock: Delinquent Girl Boss’ / Russ Meyer style full length feature film to come out with the EP. We got so hyped with Yves about it and we genuinely started planning it and got two weeks into finding crew and writing it. Unfortunately, we are visionaries who turned it into a 5 million dollar action caper idea and sadly no one else thought it was that good. We didn’t change the EP name, because it’s got huge energy and we really hope you’ll listen to it and imagine each song as a different act in a film”.

Previously released single ‘Her Body’, written alongside their mentor Charli XCX, is without a doubt the main attraction of the record. Equal parts confrontational and sensual, it’s the perfect revenge anthem directed at a cheating ex-lover that is bound to take off. It takes a step back from the rockier tracks on the album, but still results in the best song on the EP.

Closing with ‘Lucky’, Nasty Cherry put sisterhood to the front of your mind in this somewhat nostalgic track. Its sweet lyrics and summery energy will make you want to grab your best friends, run away and start a band with them.

It’s an ambitious feat to show off so many different sides of a band in a short space of time. While some of the less ambitious songs like ‘All In My Head’ and ‘What’s The Deal’ don’t capture your attention, there are enough treasures on The Movie EP to impress – there is a bright future ahead for Nasty Cherry.

The Movie is out now.
