A little under three months ago, Paris Texas exploded onto the scene with their eccentric sound. Igniting the rap genre with their rock-tinged cut ‘HEAVY METAL’, the South-Central Los Angeles duo quickly earned widespread praise online, and now they re-emerge with their debut project, BOY ANONYMOUS.

Making themselves heard with a multifaceted sonic identity, the songs of BOY ANONYMOUS waver in texture and mood: from dizzying trap to mellow R&B formulas. The roots of 2010s internet rap informs the foundations of this project, with the duo possessing similar ambitions to the early tapes of Odd Future, JPEGMAFIA, and BROCKHAMPTON. However, Paris Texas optimise their energy to arrive as a fully rendered outfit.

Their lyrics toe the line between being considered and sporadic, with tracks like ‘BETTER DAYS’ confirming their bravura. The glossy finish, scratching, and thumping west-coast beat draws influence from the mid-90s and feels melancholy as a result. 'AREA CODE' soon follows with an infusion of psychedelic surf-ready riffs that could almost be pulled from Tame Impala’s back catalogue.

Many of these transitions are effortless, but it’s tracks like 'PACK 4 DA LOW' that unlock Paris Texas’ full potential. With unharnessed energy, the track is an endless mishmash of hi-hats and gaudy flows.

From end-to-end, Paris Texas maintain a nonchalant insularity that is crucial to their aura. Despite being overly broody at times when detaching from their punk-indebted edge, the project has an electrifying cohesion that makes the eight tracks addicting to dissect. BOY ANONYMOUS radiates playful creativity and oozes a honeyed venom that keeps you hooked.

BOY ANONYMOUS arrives 14 May.
