Bradford’s Bad Boy Chiller Crew are one of the hottest musical commodities around. Bringing regional bassline rap to the masses with their outrageous lyrics and infectious beats. Now, with their second full-length mixtape, Disrespectful, they’re determined to bring bassline to the masses.

With its lush production, its becomes abruptly clear from opener 'So Much In Love' that the Bad Boy Chiller Crew are for real, and have stepped up their game considerably with this outing. As the track reaches its bass-heavy drop, the vocal stylings of the trio shine through, with their West Yorkshire rooted vocal deliveries coming in hard, aggressive and sublime. ‘Step To My Shoes’ follows a similar pattern, with it’s opening lines of, “No divvys round here mush” being so hyper-local that it’s impossible not to crack a smile. The group also tell the unpleasant realities of their upbringing in Bradford with the unflinchingly blunt line “Bradford city, that’s a big drug market” being brilliantly at odds with the party-centric bassline that makes up their backing.

Throughout the course of Disrespectful Bad Boy Chiller Crew craft some expertly written pop tracks, most notable within the tracks ‘Messages’ and ‘BMW’. Throughout the course of the tracks they take a slower, less beat-focused avenue that channels more of a traditional Radio 1xtra feel as opposed to the niche bassline sounds that permeate the rest of the mixtape.

This is not to say that the album doesn’t have its tender, slower side. This is most notable within the closing track, ‘Stick Around’. Opening up with Elton John-esque piano notes the track quickly embraces a sound reminiscent of mid 2010’s R&B. Even as the MCing takes hold, they’re backed almost soley by piano and string sections. It cuts through the groups braggadocious aura to something that comes close to moving. It’s a brilliant way to cap off the album.

Disrespectful is a turning point for the Bad Boy Chiller Crew. They’ve shown their chops as an exciting, pulse-pounding group with far more to offer than the typical Marshal Mathers LP-esque crudeness. Throughout the mixtape there are moments of true bassline brilliance and hooks that will be playing in your head for weeks on end. Make no mistake, the Bad Boy Chiller Crew are determined to take you for a ride: buckle up.

Disrespectful arrives 18 February Relentless Records/Sony.
