More about: San Cisco
If the worst that can be said about Aussie foursome San Cisco is that they're a little too sickly sweet, then they're not doing that badly.
In fact, they're one of the bands who actually improve live - the twee production is stripped away from the songs, leaving the gloriously catchy hooks remaining instead. While some of the songs do seem a little familiar at times - there's something about the jaunty melodies that starts to ring a little false - there's no doubt that San Cisco know how to have a good time and, more to the point, how to write a good indie pop song.

The band's self-titled debut album has only been out for a week, but it's a sign of a good fanbase that they're already word for word on some of the songs. Still, it's the singles which obviously get the best reception - the room is bouncing to the cheerful sounding 'Fred Astaire' and 'Awkward', despite introduced as being a song 'about stalkers', gets a definite reaction.
Twee music video filled with text bubbles aside, 'Awkward' takes on a whole new life in the setting of the Scala, and definitely benefits from it. San Cisco show every sign of enjoying themselves, grinning away as they play their particular brand of sugary-sweetness, with just the hint of a much-needed edge that - hopefully - will become more pronounced in the future. By the way that the audience are clappng along, however, they certainly don’t seem to care.
Coming back onstage for the encore, the band ask the crowd, "This next one's up to you - do you want to hear a cover?" Of course, the cover in question is Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky', which does seem as though it was going to be played regardless of the reaction (unless there were boos and throwing things on stage, which is admittedly unlikely). The song remains one of the highlights of the night - but hopefully next time, that honour will be retained by one of San Cisco's own.
