The Raveonettes 'In And Out Of Control' (Vice) Released 12/10/09

Unsettling yet beautiful...

A timely return from the Danish rock duo sees the continual theme of retro-meets-modern-in-a-dark-way spun out all over again. But then again, why change the formula when its successful?

In and Out of Control is a twisted pop record, as much about 60s revivalism as the grit and shit of the 21st century. This is perhaps it is so disturbing. These verby-surf rock is authentic flower power. Yet I doubt The Ronettes would ever have sung  ‘Boys Who Rape (Should Be Destroyed)’. Or the modern love song ‘Breaking Into cars’.

It’s the fact that such dark subject matters are encapsulated in such tight jangly song, such as the stunning ‘Heart Of Stone’, structures that freaks me out personally. Only ‘Break Up Girls!’ lets loose a little more with a psychotic noise-scape intro before it returns to the almost-medicated restrain of the rest of the songs.

Unsettling yet beautiful, it’s a sure fire winner for those people ready to fall off the edge of modern order. Think of it as your swan songs as you’re carted off to the asylum.

  • What kind of moronic review is this? By a 16-year-old writing their first review grateful for a free CD? Where's the insight? Analysis? Surely Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed) bears closer scrutiny than The Ronettes wouldn't have sung it. Jon Bye - hold your head in shame.

  • Don't see the need to prove my pedigree or to hang my head in shame - I stand by my review. To be honest the rating reflects that while this is an enjoyable album it is shallow on meaning. If you want a complete track by track analysis go to your favourite obsessive fan site. However, in my 300 word limit, I figured an in depth look at one track would be utterly pointless. As it stands, it leaves the review open for intrigue in the band. So Bill Rector, post your comments in shame instead

  • I think his point is that you've clearly never heard of proper grammar or punctuation. You've basically started a paragraph with "It’s the fact that" and that you wrote "This is perhaps it is so disturbing." you made plenty more mistakes but the gist is that you should maybe have edited the review or possibly stop writing all together. Peace.
