One listen to this and you will be forced to forgive multicultural musical mix-up, Sunny Day Sets Fire, for having a stupid name (reportedly the result of an internet band name generator). ‘End Of The Road’ sound like the first hot ray of sun that creeps through the window at the end of spring, so bright and alive and full of the promise that pretty soon we’ll all be flying kites around barbeques in the park under blue skies. There is more going on here than anyone could hope to digest in one listen, including those indispensable handclaps (in current musical vogue), more guitars than you can shake a stick (of rock) at and a few dreamy summer synths too. Over all that Italian vocalist Mauro sings “If you don’t mind I’d like to get lost with you.” How could anyone refuse?
Sunny Day Sets Fire sit comfortably among the maracas and tambourines in the sixties psych pop bracket. The release of ‘End Of The Road’ is so perfectly seasonally timed because it also seems to epitomise a collective yearning for fearless cheer removed from the stiff routine of the every day. If you were looking for a window of escape from winter, look no further.
Released 14/04/08 on Brikabrak.
