It would seem that it's become an aggressively vital necessity that female popstars offer all parts of their body for the internet to pass judgement on.
So much so, in fact, that when Taylor Swift avoided showing the world her entire stomach for the past few years, the internet became a hub of suspicion. The obvious and natural conclusion to be drawn was that she does not, in fact, possess a belly button. It really is the only explanation for such stunning and inconsiderate prudishness.
For reasons that we will never understand, Swift's elusive belly button has been the subject of genuinely intense online debate for years. A Refinery29 story from November titled 'The Reason You'll Never See Taylor Swift's Belly Button' got over 10,000 shares. Several Reddit forums have been dedicated to the subject.
Swift herself waded into the debate last year too, telling Lucky, "I only partially commit to the midriff thing—you’re only seeing lower rib cage. I don’t want people to know if I have one or not."
Imagine the shock, joy and relief that shook the world this weekend then, when Swift posted a photo on Instagram that proved the rumours wrong. She does have a belly button. It provided a heady high that many will be riding for weeks to come.
