A series to wrap up a preposterous year
If you lived through 2020, you might reasonably ask the question: what the fuck was that?
It's not been a normal one, that's for sure, and the time it will take to reckon with what's happened will stretch far into the future. Let's start by looking at how we spent the weirdest year in living memory.
We collared a bunch of our favourite bands and artists and asked them questions about how they experienced the year that all of us will remember forever.

Today, Joe Shit of Joe & The Shitboys answers our 2020 quiz.
How are you, really?
I’m really fucking good. Things are aaalmost back to normal over here, and the vaccine is so close! It looks like there’s light at the end of the tunnel. The Reson for Hardcore Vibes got a lot of positive feedback, and it seems like people actually still give a shit about Joe & The Shitboys. Hopefully the tour in April/May will happen, but I try not to get excited about stuff like that these days.
Did you watch Tiger King back in March?
She killed her husband.
What else did you binge watch?
The Umbrella Academy. I’m not that into superhero films/shows, but I have a soft spot for art concerning not so nice people with special powers. Umbrella Academy was exciting, unpredictable, tear jerking, and genuinely funny. My Chemical Romance just got a new fan. Other than that, I’ve been watching way too much pro wrestling. Kenny Omega is a bicon.
What did you drink and eat too much of?
It’s been going on for a while, I don’t think I eat or drink too much of anything now. At one point I had gained 10kg, but I’ve since lost 25kg. I was drinking too much coffee before Covid, but I’ve recently started adding vanilla soymilk to it, if that counts.
Describe a joyful moment.
Seeing my grandfather at the retirement home for the first time in several months. He was sleeping the entire time (he’s got dementia), but I was so happy to see him that I cried. It was a moment where I felt I could breathe for the first time in a while and it made me think of everything that’s great in my life at this moment, and it is a whole fucking lot.
Did you take up a new hobby?
I spent a ton of money on a monstrous gaming rig that I’m mostly using to play Heroes of Might and Magic III (1999). I’m also playing Jet Set Radio, a game where you vibe to trip hop while graffitiing on rollerskates while running from the police in a cel shaded dystopia…it was also released 20+ years ago.
What's the best thing you read in quarantine?
The Have a Nice Day autobiography by Mick Foley. That dude has broken every bone in his body in the pursuit of becoming a legendary pro wrestler. Reading the behind the scenes stuff about the time he got thrown off a cage by a zombie mortician, and had one of his teeth poking out of his nostril alone makes it a worthwhile read.
What's the best album you heard in quarantine?
Ultra Mono by IDLES. I love the good vibing, rough yet catchy songs with a billion references. For real though, I heard it for the first time in November and IDLES managed to make it to the number one artist spot on my Spotify wrapped. Congratulations, IDLES.
What did you miss the most?
I knew this was gonna be a question, and I really didn’t wanna give a cliché answer, but tbh I miss festivals. I miss showing up without having done any research, rushing to see as much stuff as possible, dancing, ignoring my aching feet, and meeting a bunch of people in the process.
The Reson for Hardcore Vibes is out now.
