Following a bizarre few weeks for TikTok that saw a culture secretary try (and fail) to relate to young people and a cosmetics brand cash in on an ugly defamation trial, it’s a relief to focus on the joy and simplicity of viral songs.
Whether it’s a single from 2022’s most anticipated album, a clip from an old Disney Channel show, or an accidental product of a DJ’s boredom that ammasses a cult following, TikTok remains a long, eclectic playlist where every song is capable of having its moment.
Harry Styles - As It Was
@bellanjanie Pls be ready for more Harry content when the album comes out ðŸ¤ðŸ˜‚ #asitwas ♬ As It Was - Harry Styles
If these charts were real, Harry Styles would undoubtedly be amid a three-week stint at number one, with every other video on the FYP faintly soundtracked by the bridge to ‘As It Was’, the debut single from his forthcoming third solo album. That, combined with the slew of so-called ‘Harrychella’ content solidifies his constant presence on every corner of the app. If only Liam Payne’s new accent got as much love…
Olivia Rodrigo & Madison Hu - The Comeback Song
@mycloverbloomss #oliviarodrigo #livies #driverslicense #sour #fyp #HaierAirPower #fypシ ♬ sorry I didnt order a glass of your opinion - Jann 🦋 (Taylor's Version)
Victim to the double-edged sword of internet virality is Olivia Rodrigo, who was previously propelled to international stardom thanks to the reception of ‘Drivers License’ on the app in early 2021. Now however, it’s a remnant of her Disney Channel past doing the rounds, with 'The Comeback Song', a 2016 song from the show Bizaardvark enjoying new-found popularity as a reaction video. A younger Rodrigo sings “sorry I didn't order a glass of your opinion”, and Tiktok loves it, though it’s imaginable that Gen-Z’s fave pop star isn’t as thrilled.
Disco Lines - BABY GIRL
@discolines ♬ original sound - discolines
Disco Lines, the same DJ behind this viral Taylor Swift remix, is back with TikTok’s song of the summer. This time he delivers ‘BABY GIRL’, an up-beat summer anthem built upon a sample of Childish Gambino’s ‘Do Ya Like’, from an early mixtape.
The track was created “accidentally” in an airport lounge in early March, leaving users to eagerly await a full version while they rinsed a 23 second clip.
Miranda Cosgrove - “Probably fuck” remix
@celebritiesworldx the famous interview😂 #mirandacosgrove ♬ suono originale - celebritiesworldx
An old interview clip of iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove shredding her percieved innocence with the revelation “I actually do cuss a little”, before proclaiming her favourite curseword is “probably fuck” went viral and, because this is TikTok, it now has a remix to match.
Though this stems from an authentic interview clip, its immense virality has triggered a wider debate on which celebrities are now dropping bizarre soundbites in a PR move to achieve the same level of internet fame. There’s fingers currently pointed at Nick Jonas and Hailey Bieber, but there’s sure to be more hopping on the bandwagon in the coming weeks.
Keith Whitley - Miami, My Amy
@charlottehattonn Tall girl problems #fypシ #newtrend #tallgirl #pov ♬ Miami, My Amy - Keith Whitley
The lyrics seemingly have no connection to this trend, which sees users show their point of view journeying through life with various ailments, from unclear skin to being a tall girl, and the multitude of unwanted remarks they receive from varying facets of the population.
Randomly selected photos of strangers play in a slideshow, used to portray each of these stereotypes and the kinds of things they would say. It’s a Gen-Z take on those Buzzfeed-era “things women are tired of hearing” videos, though much more niche and with the added dread that an old Facebook profile picture will be next to appear on the screen.
