And to add to the terror is the first listen of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke’s first foray into film scores.
First things first: the trailer for the film certainly raises very high hopes for this remake. The original movie starred Jessica Harper as an American ballet dancer who is drawn into a supernatural conspiracy at the German dance academy that she transfers to. She also appears in the new version, albeit in a different role Judging by the newly released trailer, the reboot will follow pretty much the same narrative arc.
Shot in winter in Italy, you can pretty much feel the chill coming from the screen and adding to the sense of dread are disturbing images of bound wrists, hooks, maggots crawling across faces, a body in a cupboard and a girl slithering up the wall.
And then there’s Thom Yorke’s music that starts with a drone before ominously rising into an overwhelming crescendo, all of which augers well for the film. If the rest of his score follows along the same lines then we’re going to be in for an unsettling treat.
The original 1977 score was written by cult Italian prog band Goblin. Intriguingly, their music was composed before a frame of the movie was shot.
The new version of Suspiria stars Dakota Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Mia Goth and Tilda Swinton and is scheduled for release in November.
