Wayne Coyne has revealed more details on his forthcoming album with Miley Cyrus, saying that the pair's new songs sound similar to Portishead.
Coyne and Cyrus have been discussing collaborations for some time now, with The Flaming Lips appearing onstage during Cyrus' Bangerz tour last year. The pair also recorded two Beatles covers, two suitably surreal takes on 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' and 'A Day In The Life'.
Speaking to Billboard, Coyne reveals the band are working on an album of seven songs written and recorded over the last year. No release date on title has been determined but the pair have been recording in both the Lips' studio in Oklahoma and Cyrus' home in Los Angeles.
"Her studio is just a little room with a desk," says Coyne, "and Miley was sitting there mixing. I was like, 'I can't picture Beyoncé doing this!' It's not a putdown of Beyoncé. I just don't see her recording her own vocals and then EQ'ing it. It's so punk rock!"
Coyne also praised Cyrus ability to combine darker emotions into her work. '"She does the pop thing so great, so it still feels pop, but a slightly wiser, sadder, more true version," Coyne explained. "Some of it reminds me of Pink Floyd and Portishead." We wait with baited breath to see what Geoff Barrow makes of this on Twitter.
Coyne has also been impressed by Cyrus vocal prowess. Citing her versality he explained, "She can do 100 takes, and they'll all be different and good."
