Snoop Dogg has defended Iggy Azalea and Macklemore, saying that “they got soul” and that they are “inspired by hip-hop”.
Snoop Dogg was asked what his thoughts are on this “suburban streak in hip-hop”, including Iggy Azalea and Macklemore, in a new interview with the New York Times. “Rap is supposed to grow,” he replied. “One thing about Iggy and Macklemore: They got soul. They’re inspired by hip-hop. I don’t care how you’re gonna take it to your people and flip it and dip it and serve it.”
You may recall that Snoop Dogg and Iggy Azalea have had a history of conflict, which began when he posted a picture mocking Azalea on Instagram last year, which then led to a string of heated Tweets and Instagram posts between the two of them. It eventually ended with Snoop apologizing to her, saying in a video he posted to Instagram: “No more bad talk. I apologize. I'm sorry. I won't do it again.”
In his interview, Snoop Dogg also discussed his new album BUSH, which is out later this month – but you can stream it in full now via iTunes. Discussing why this album is more funk-inspired and has less rap, he said that there is a “void for that style of music. I think if rap never came out, I’d have been a R&B singer. I would have been like Rick James, though — an edgy renegade.”
He also spoke about the riots in Baltimore, saying: “You’ve got Bloods and Crips and Muslims now uniting for some kind of cause. Despite that man losing his life, so many people are gonna come together behind that — people who wouldn’t have talked, who would have been killing each other, now they’re gonna be with each other.”
