After suffering a vocal chord haemorrhage whilst on tour, Sam Smith is set to undergo an operation which will not see him back to health for six-eight weeks.

The Grammy-sweeping singer was forced to cancel gigs on his current tour including dates in Australia, Japan and the Philippines due to the vocal hiccough - the cancellations are set to be further extended under doctor's orders will eat into his summer UK shows.

Last week, the singer took to Instagram to apologise to the fans who missed out on the gigs: "Very upset about Japan and Manilla dates, I've just left Australia and I'm on my way to the states to see a specialist to see what to do from there... This is fucking horrid.''

He has now returned to the social network to update his followers on the progress, his message read:

"Dear all: I am very upset to announce I have been battling my vocal cords better the last 10 days but unfortunately they haven't recovered and I am going to need surgery. I'm so gutted to be missing all the shows and events I was meant to be playing at. The doctors say I will be back in 6-8 weeks and I cannot wait to sing for you all soon."

This means his shows in France and Monaco are in jeapordy as well as his set at Wild Life Festival which has been curated by Rudimental and collaborators Disclosure. It is hoped that Smith will be well enough to complete his summer of festival shows, including a special headline gig at Thetford Forest on 3 July.
