More about: Glastonbury Festival
You might have thought spending just over £200 on a Glastonbury ticket was a big commitment - but a new study into the revenue generated by music festivals has found that the average total spend for a Glastonbury goer is £565.
This makes the five day festival, which kicked off yesterday (24 June), the second most expensive in the world, behind Roskilde in Denmark. The cost presumably includes travel, food, drink, merchandise and more.
According to figures released by UK Music last week, 9.5 million people attended British festivals and concerts in 2014, generating over £3 billion. Nearly 550,000 of these came from abroad.
Last year in southwest England, where Glastonbury has been held since 1970 at Worth Farm in Somerset, £221 million was generated from festivals - with Glastonbury thought to account for around a third of this.
Speaking of these figures, UK Music’s chief executive Jo Dipple said, "The UK’s rich music heritage and infrastructure has made the UK the go-to destination for live music globally and these statistics show how tourism is now a bedrock of British music and the wider economy."
If you're at Glastonbury right now, or headed there soon, the fact that it's being headlined by Kanye West, Florence + The Machine and The Who should justify that £565 price tag - and if you're not, you can feel happy to have saved yourself a small fortune.
