More about:

Nirvana's acclaimed self-titled 'best of' collection is finally due to be released on vinyl this summer.

The multi-platinum-selling compilation was first posthumously released back in 2002, featuring many of Nirvana's greatest hits and the then-unreleased 'You Know You're Right'. As well as huge singles from the peak of their fame during Nevermind and In Utero, was 'About A Girl' from debut Bleach, 'Been A Son' from the 'Blew' EP, the non-LP single 'Sliver', and live acoustic versions of 'All Apologies' and David Bowie’s 'The Man Who Sold The World' from MTV Unplugged In New York.

Now, the album will be released on 180gram 45rpm double LP, and packaged in a furnace black gatefold sleeve on 28 August. It will also be available in the less-sexy edition of a 33rpm single LP standard vinyl edition.

  • Speaking of the photographs, Modern Rocks Gallery owner Steven Walker said: "These images are incredibly important. They're an important piece of rock history, and they also mean a lot to me personally as a musician and as a fan. They show a band on the verge of changing the face of music, a band about to conquer the world, a band about to release something that was to become one of the most influential albums of our time. But they also show a band on tour, a band that are tired, a band that are probably homesick and a little bit grumpy too. And a band that has just been thrown in a swimming pool on their day off because someone from the record company told them that's what they had to do, and that's why I love them!"

  • He continued: "As a music fan first and foremost, I'm so pleased to be able to make these photographs available to both Nirvana fans and music fans alike because they show so much more than 3 blokes in a band floating in a swimming pool. The almost surreal images of Kurt Cobain literally hanging in the water, sometime looking lost, sometimes looking totally insane, are the ones that I love the most. Nevermind kicked down the doors when it arrived on the scene, everyone knows the floating baby front cover, but these outtakes are as unique as they are cool."
