Awesome news Red Hot Chili Peppers fans - get set for a huge year ahead with the band set to return in 2016.

The funk-rock heroes haven't released an album since 2011's I'm With You. Now, it looks like new material is on the horizon - with the band today announced for a string of European Festivals.

They're confirmed to headline Holland's Pinkpop Festival with Rammstein, as well as Poland's Open'Er with Florence + The Machine, Germany's Rock Am Ring, Denmark's Roskilde and Austria's Novarock.

One would naturally assume that UK dates will surely follow? Our money would be on Reading and Leeds, V Festival or maybe British Summer Time? Glastonbury perhaps? Only time will tell.

Last year, it was revealed that the band had '30 songs completed' for a new album

"Flea owns a really great studio now," said guitarist Josh Klinghofer last summer. "I've been recording with the Chili Peppers every day. We've written musically 30 songs now. We sort of did this last time, which was my first album.

"We piled a shitload of stuff on Anthony and he actually came through. He wrote lyrics to 50 songs in the end. We recorded 50 last time. We released an extra 17 that didn't go on the album. We are conscious to not do that again, but we're already up to 28 or 30 songs."

As to whether longtime producer Rick Rubin will be on board, Klinghoffer admitted: "That is sort of up in the air still. Normally he becomes involved in the arranging process but he hasn't yet been which is good for me. I like it the way we are doing it so far. There hasn't been an official producer named yet, so in the absence of that, you never know what could happen."

Red Hot Chili Peppers have worked with Rick Rubin on every album since 1989.
